The story behind Citra
SUN IN YOUR EYES, A HINT OF FRESH HOPS IN THE AIR
It is no overstatement to say that the Yakima Valley is the hop paradise of the United States. Nowhere does the hop plant thrive like it does here. In the Yakima Valley, the sun shines about 300 days a year, with temperatures reaching 40°. Thanks to irrigation with water from the mountains and the river, the hops enjoy plenty of sunshine without suffering from drought.
Hops are delicate plants: they grow best under the watchful eyes of experienced, passionate, farmers.
SLOW GROWN TO PERFECTION
Timing is everything. Citra hops are harvested when they are just ripe enough and as quickly as possible. The entire harvest is done in less than two days when the conditions require it. Between the meticulous selection, harvest timing, and the speed of picking and drying: all contribute to preserve the intense hop aromas of Citra.
« On our farm, different hop varieties are planted where they thrive most. For example, the field where we grow the Citra hops for Duvel consists of a rich mixture of silt and loam: ideal for growing hops. By the way, the field for the Citra hops is one of the oldest on our farm. We have been leasing it from the Yakama tribe since the 1940s ».
The story behind Citra
The Duvel brewers are always looking for innovative beers and flavours. That passion for brewing and the ambition to create new flavours eventually led to the ideal Duvel Tripel Hop brews. They could not resist the demand to brew the beer again and now Citra has become a permanent reference on the Belgian market.
A HISTORY OF TASTE
In 2007, the first dry hop variety was created at Duvel, and over the years many hop combinations were tested. But when the Citra hop was added in 2012, there was no denying the successful pairing. Duvel was the perfect canvas for the intense aromas of Citra: it shined through, with hints of tropical fruit, over the dry-bitter snap.
ADDING A PUNCH THROUGH DRY HOPPING
To brew a Duvel Tripel Hop, our brewers don’t just add a third hop, they apply a dry-hopping technique. This brewing technique means that in addition to the hops during the cooking process, extra hops are added in a later phase of the brewing process (during the lagering). As the extra hops are added after the initial fermentation, the oils are not cooked out and create a boost of hop flavours and aromas, while avoiding increasing the beer’s bitterness.
« Due to its intense citrus and grapefruit profile, Citra complements and boosts the aromatic characteristics inherently present in the classic Duvel. This Duvel Tripel Hop will therefore please many specialty beer lovers, while we will always ensure that the intrinsic Duvel characteristics are preserved. »
